A visit from Brightly.

Melbourne duo Brightly know that music is about more than what you hear. Taking sounds from all aspects of life (including screaming kids on a plane), and combining it with art, colour, laid-back beats and transcendent vocals, Charlie Gleason and Nic Lam have created something truly refreshing.
The seemingly paradoxical mish-mash of folk and electro works effortlessly and creates the kind of poignancy that makes you look at old photos of people you don’t see anymore.
The melancholic quality of Charlie Gleason’s voice is reminiscent of Antony and the Johnsons or James Blake – praise that cannot be given lightly. The similarity was proven to me during a live in-studio acoustic performance of debut single: Tokyo.
Check out Charlie’s performance and my interview with him here:
Brightly’s debut double-A side We were in Tokyo & then we woke up is now out, and comes in an appropriately bright, yellow case and is full of pictures of Nic and Charlie throwing paint at eachother. The visual accompaniment to the band’s music really adds to the experience – much like wine with dinner. Or like cupcakes and Drew Barrymore films. Or chilli and everything.
Anyway, this band has a bright future. Hear the second track from the release here:
